Bearing Tips
Since the technology has boom in the field of Automation, a lot of research work has been done on designing of bearing for efficient operations. As important as research it is , also very important in bearing domain to properly utilize bearing during mounting, dismounting and handling.
In our prestigious experience we have much more to guide our valuable customers for saving premature failure of bearings and ultimately boost their confidence in us. There are following areas where precautions required and most of the users and Technical staff neglected valuable findings:
Mounting
- Read the instructions carefully and check about the tolerance of bearing seat before mounting on shaft.
- Shaft must be properly clean and bearings mount in neat and clean environment isolated from dust or any contaminated particles.
- Cold mounting must be done on such bearings whose inner diameter may be 80 mm or less, otherwise use thermal mounting for 80mm or above inner diameter bearing.
- Do not apply direct force by hammer, chisel or mallet on outer raze and cage of the bearing.
- Use hydraulic method for mounting large inner diameter bearing by applying force on inner raze
- Only give oil bath to those bearing that are recommended, with a flash point below 250 ̊C. Use only recommended oil like transformer oil or low viscosity hydraulic oil
- Don’t give oil bath to shielded (2ZR) or sealed (2RSR) bearings.
- In case of bearings with eccentric locking collars, if the direction of rotation is not known, bearings at either end should be locked in opposing directions.
- In case of adapter sleeves, do not exceed the recommended tightening torques.
Dismounting
- Dismounting is a very critical operation because if it is not performed well it might damage the bearing as well as shaft.
- Don’t hit directly on the shaft or bearing with the hammer and mallet it may cause serious damage.
- Don’t apply direct flame or cutting to bearing because it cause damage the shaft as well
- In case of using a mechanical or hydraulic puller, check its reach & spread properly.
- As a thumb rule, the diameter of the shaft from which bearing has to be dismounted should not be more than 2.5 times the diameter of the stud of the puller.
- For dismounting puller must be centered correctly and turned continuously.
Inventory Management
- Bearing must be stored according to the standard recommendation by the manufacturer like standard temperature up to 35 ̊ C and relative humidity level up to 60%.
- Don’t open the seal unless you have to plan to properly utilize it.
- Always place bearing on proper support that completely cover its circumference to avoid any damage.
- Don’t place bearings on the top of each other always follow first in first out rule.
- Place boxes in such manner that their model is completely and easily readable.
- Warehouse environment must be neat and clean and free from any chemical that will damage
bearing material and life.
Lubrication
- Lubrication is the most important operation for smooth operation of bearings.
- According to survey 55% of the bearings face pre-mature failure just due to improper lubrication
- For selecting proper lubricant for bearing we need to encounter all types of factors like rpms, axial load, radial load, operating temperature, vibration ,viscosity index and NLGI number.
- Initial filling quantity, re-greasing period must be according to recommendation by manufacturers.
- Greases must be preferred as compared to oil because it can easily fill all places of bearing and also work as a seal for bearing, oil in a sense loses easily and cause heat generation.
- Water content may cause corrosion for avoiding it sodium soap is mixed with grease so that it absorb water content. In this way bearing life become better but grease leakage chances may increase.
- When a bearing is operated on higher rpms rate as compared with preferred value then grease leak out from bearing and it range up to 10 %. With this amount a bearing can easily fail even if it is operating temperature at 25 ̊ C.
Handling
- Handling a bearing is very important, only open all packing covers when you are willing to utilize it.
- Always takes bearing from original suppliers and must ensure that bearing is completely sealed.
- Don’t try to check the authenticity of bearing by opening its packet covers just make sure from its box detail and by purchasing from original suppliers.
